TROLLEYS AND TRAMS OF YOKOHAMA

STREETCARS OF YOKOHAMA HEADED BACK IN TIME

MORE TROLLEYS AND STREETCARS OF JAPAN, THANKS TO MY FRIEND, QUIETUDE. IT WAS QUIETUDE'S RESEARCH THAT HELPED ME TO RENEW OLD MEMORIES IN MY MIND OF THE STREETCARS OF YOKOHAMA.

HOW MANY TIMES IN THE LATE EVENINGS WHILE IN YOKOHAMA DID I LOOK AND LISTEN TO THEIR MUSIC, THEIR CLICKING AND CLACKING, THEIR SUDDEN SPARKS AND SOMETIMES LARGE FLASHES, HOW MANY TIMES?

OH, TO SEE THOSE CARRIAGES OF ANOTHER ERA IN REALITY INSTEAD OF DREAMS WOULD BE LIKE A ROMANCE THAT TIME DID NOT END.

THERE WOULD BE NO MORE IMAGES OF A SHORELINE DISAPPEARING IN A MISTY MORNING FOG.

I WOULD BE ON A
TRAIN HEADED FOR YOKOHAMA TO CATCH A TROLLEY BOUND FOR MOTOMACHI AND
END UP AT THE WEIN.

A RAMBLING POEM ABOUT ANOTHER
TIME AND PLACE,
ANOTHER ERA.

1960s advertisement for Fujiya Hotel

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IMAGES OF MT FUJI THAT I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFETIME. THIS IS THE ESSENCE OF THE JAPANESE ILLUSTRATION DEPICTING THE FAMOUS MOUNTAIN. THE RED BORDER AND THE COLORS COMBINE TO CREATE A MINDSET OF JAPAN IN THE MIND OF THE WESTERNER. THE EDITOR

TOUR OF DUTY IN JAPAN

Robert Frost (1874–1963)

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

THE ESSENCE OF ALL THINGS JAPANESE BY R.L.HUFFSTUTTER 1963

THE ESSENCE OF ALL THINGS JAPANESE BY R.L.HUFFSTUTTER 1963

I HAVE LOVED JAPAN LIKE MY OWN SINCE THE EARLY 60S WHEN I ARRIVED AS AN 18 YEAR YOUTH. I WAS BLESSED WITH A THREE YEAR TOUR OF DUTY AT NAS ATSUGI. I MET SOME BEAUTIFUL STUDENTS WHO BECAME FRIENDS. WE SPENT MUCH TIME SKETCHING AND LEARNING LANGUAGE. WE ENJOYED JAPANESE ROCK AND ROLL AT THE OLD PEANUTS CLUB IN YOKOHAMA; WE WENT TO SANKIEN GARDENS, SKETCHED. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TIMES IN MY LIFE. IF I HAD NEVER BEEN TO JAPAN, I WOULD LEAVE THIS WORLD WITHOUT THE JOY OF A BEAUTY AND A PEOPLE I NEVER KNEW. THANKFULLY, I HAD MY TIME IN JAPAN AND I SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER JAPAN WITH A JOY AND REVERENCE ONLY FEW CAN UNDERSTAND. IN MOST LIFETIMES, A MAN LOVES ONLY ONE COUNTRY; I LOVED TWO.
